Prepared by the Stainless Steel Specification Committee of the Codes and Standards Activities Division of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE

Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Structural Members, Standard ASCE/SEI 8-22, provides design criteria for the determination of the strength of cold-formed stainless steel structural members and connections for use in buildings and other statically loaded structures. It is a significant update to ASCE 8-02 which incorporates the latest findings in both stainless steel and carbon steel research and practice.

Major changes include adoption of format, provisions, and reliability indexes aligned with AISI S100-16 where possible; adoption of the use of initial modulus of elasticity and transverse 0.2% offset yield stress; integration of new design methods such as the direct strength method and the continuous strength method; corrosion resistance requirements specific to stainless steel applications; a broader scope of stainless steel alloys; and a useful summary of applicable alloy properties. This updated standard has been adopted into the International Building Code.

The design strength requirements of this standard are intended for use by structural engineers and those engaged in preparing and administrating local building codes.

This standard was developed by a consensus standards development process that has been accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Accreditation by ANSI, a voluntary accreditation body representing public and private sector standards development organizations in the United States and abroad, signifies that the standards development process used by ASCE has met the ANSI requirements for openness, balance, consensus, and due process.
